How the money works

Every business I talk to is a slightly different size and shape, so I quote per job rather than publishing a rate card that would be wrong for most people reading it. What I can tell you up front is exactly how the billing works, so there are no surprises in it.

Fixed-price project

A defined piece of work with a clear end — a tool built, systems connected, AI set up and handed over.

We agree the scope, I quote one price for it, and that is the price. If the work grows beyond what we agreed, we talk about it before anything is done, not after.

  • One number, agreed before any work starts
  • Written scope so we both know what "finished" means
  • Part on agreement, the rest on delivery
  • Changes to scope are quoted separately, in writing

Hourly

Small or unpredictable jobs, and anything where nailing down a scope up front would cost more than the work.

You are billed for the time spent, logged and itemised so you can see where it went. We agree a ceiling before I start, and I come back to you rather than quietly passing it.

  • An agreed cap, never exceeded without your say-so
  • Itemised time, so the invoice explains itself
  • Sensible for one-off fixes and second opinions
  • Easy to stop at any point

Monthly retainer

Ongoing admin and back-office support, or keeping a hand on something already built.

A set number of hours each month at an agreed monthly rate. You get a predictable bill and a predictable amount of my time, and you are not renegotiating every time something comes up.

  • Same amount every month, so it budgets cleanly
  • An agreed block of hours and what they cover
  • First call on my time when something urgent lands
  • Month to month — no long contract to sign

Why there are no figures on this page. A rate card published now would be wrong for most of the people reading it, and I would rather quote your job than have you talk yourself out of an email over a number that was never meant for you. Ask, and you will get a real one.

Ground rules

True of every job, whichever model it runs on

  • The first conversation is free, including a straight answer about whether I am the right person for the job.
  • You get a written quote before anything starts. Nothing begins on a verbal yes.
  • If I think the problem can be solved without hiring me, I will say so.
  • Anything I build for you is yours, including the source code.
